Translucence Interrupted
This necklace features multi-colored, translucent, handmade glass beads. With sterling silver chain, wire work, and clasp. I call it Translucence Interrupted because, as part of the design, two of the beads are slightly more opaque providing a nice counterpoint to the transparency. Silver Accents
The handmade bead in this necklace started with white glass wrapped in silver foil. Layers of transparent glass cover part of the bead allowing silver seams to show through. Where the silver was not covered, a soft flame was used to melt the silver into the glass resulting in the rich caramel color accents. This round teardrop shaped lampwork bead combines two high silver content glasses. The interaction of these glasses along with varying the torch settings as the final step of finishing the bead produced the subtle patterning and blue/green sheen on the lower portion of the bead. As a final step, pure silver wire was wrapped around the bead and gently melted into the glass. The nine handmade lampwork beads in this necklace/earring set were made with semi-transparent CIM sangre red glass. Glass Bead Pendant
This bicone shaped lampwork bead combines pure silver foil with intense blue, Triton, and Gaia glass. The components were added one at a time to form a round ball. The next step was to hold the stainless steel rod on which the bead was formed vertically while heating the glass to a sufficiently molten state to allow it to flow along the rod. Very subtle patterning developed as the glass flowed. Thanks to Lara Lutrick for sharing the technique. The base bead is white glass that was then partially covered with a soft purple glass combined with transparent amethyst. This round cone shaped lampwork bead was made with a high silver content glass on a base of black and encased in clear glass. The rich striations of color were created by varying the propane/oxygen settings of the torch along with alternate heating and cooling of the base glass before it was encased. The final step was addition of a black cap at the top of the bead. Note: the clear glass at the bottom is not as obvious as seen in the angle at which this photo was taken. This necklace features a single, handmade ivory bead encased in silver foil and partially covered with transparent aquamarine glass. The silver leaf, where not covered, interacts with the ivory glass to create the sandy, grey/brown surface. Sterling silver chain and earrings. Aphrodite is the Greek Goddess of beauty and love. As I was making the beads for this set those classical qualities kept coming to mind. I am also fascinated by flowing volcanic lava. The volcano (Haleakala) here on Maui has long been dormant. Not so Kilauea on the Big Island. It has been spewing out lava continuously since 1983. This bead is my latest attempt to capture the volcanic activity in glass. Once again I didn't fully succeed but I liked the bead anyway. Consistent with the texture of cooling lava, there are deep folds in the lower portion of this bead. As I worked with this technique I played with the variations and realized the need to carefully alternate them as the necklace was strung. This handmade fused glass pendant has a deep blue, almost purple, base with layers of dichroic glass with very soft and gentle shades of pink, green, and blue. The top layers are arranged to give the sense of looking into the pendant. The top surface combines smooth and textured surfaces for added interest. The pendant is strung with very pale pink stick and round fresh water pearls and sterling beads. Pendant bail, clasp and earrings are sterling silver. Ali'i Aniani II
This set features four handmade beads with 24 karat gold leaf partially covering a rich red glass. Note that the glass used is a brighter red than that in necklace/earring set NE-136. The Hawaiian title of this piece, Ali'i Aniani II, translates to Royal (or Noble) Glass. The necklace is strung on 19 strand, 24 karat gold plated, stainless wire encased in nylon. The handmade bead of this pendant features a complex combination of dark transparent topaz glass and a special glass that is high in silver content. It has a high sheen with very subtle patterning which results from cutting and twisting the molten glass as it is shaped. Ali'i Aniani III
This set features four handmade beads with 24 karat gold leaf partially covering a rich red glass. The Hawaiian title of this piece, Ali'i Aniani III, translates to Royal (or Noble) Glass. The necklace is strung on 19 strand, 24 karat gold plated, stainless wire encased in nylon. The handmade beads are complemented with gold lined seed beads, and red Swarovski crystals. The clasp and ear wires are 14 karat gold fill. Necklace Length: 19-3/4" Drop: 4" long This set has been donated to Halau Kekuaokala`au`ala`iliahi, a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and perpetuation of the hula and the Hawaiian culture. It will be auctioned at their 5th anniversary concert, Ke`ala`iliahi, at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center on October 17, 2009. This event will feature over 150 dancers along with renowned Hawaiian musicians. Update: I am so honored that this piece was purchased by the mother of the halau kumu Brandon 'iliahi Paredes. In this case a base of opal yellow glass was partially covered with two high silver content glasses and a persimmon coral glass. Birth of the Cosmos
The handmade focal bead in this set is an interplay of black, ivory, amethyst, and blue glass with pure silver foil and wire. The other handmade beads in the set are black glass wrapped in pure silver foil which was then melted in to produce the ÒstarryÓ effect. Glass Bead Pendant
This flat diamond shaped lampwork bead was made with a base of transparent red glass. Psyche, a glass with a high silver content, was added at the bottom and in vine-like patterns on the upper portion of the bead. After final shaping and flattening of the bead, a thin rod of clear glass was used to add swirls. The Psyche glass has a wonderful silver-blue sheen. This round cylinder shaped lampwork bead was made with a base of turquoise partially covered with white glass. The bead was decorated with shards of glass that have a high silver content. Interaction of the types of glass used along with varying the mix of propane and oxygen in the torch resulted in the subtle patterns and the wonderful silver sheen. This flat teardrop shaped pendant bead was created on a base of alabaster white glass partially covered light transparent grey, pearl grey, and dark transparent teal glasses. Cutting and shaping the molten glass with a pick and paddle produced the beautiful patterning. Sea Foam
The seven handmade, lampwork beads in this necklace/earring set have a base of white glass that was then rolled in a mixture of petroleum green and ivory frit (ground glass). As the bead was re-heated to melt in the frit, the interaction of the two frit glasses produced very tiny black flecks that provide delightful patterning and "texture". All of the handmade beads are round except the diamond shaped beads which have been flattened. The piece is finished with round white jade and green garnet beads and sterling sliver "daisy" beads. Emergence
he two handmade beads in this necklace start with white glass wrapped in silver foil which was then melted in. Layers of transparent glass cover part of the bead and a razor was used to cut into the layers of molten glass creating the ÒemergingÓ patterns. The necklace is finished with Swavorski crystals and silver lined glass seed beads. The clasp is sterling silver. Necklace Length: 19-1/4" Drop: 4"

Two Makes Three
The two handmade beads in this necklace were made using just two colors of glass; ivory and a silver rich green. Cutting into the molten glass as it was shaped resulted in it partially blending to produce the rich brown patterning. The necklace is strung with Czech seed beads, sterling silver beads, and Swavorski crystals. The clasp and earrings are sterling silver. Necklace: 16" Drop: 4"
Glass Bead Pendant
This flat, diamond shaped pendant bead is another in my ÒmarbleÓ series. Though the colors are unlike any marble IÕve ever seen, it is the patterning of marble that I want to emulate in glass. The base color of this bead is black. Red, orange, yellow, and clear glasses were added to partially cover the black. The molten glass was then manipulated with a pick and shaping paddle to produce the beautiful patterning. .
